HOW TO ENSURE YOUR DIGITAL PURCHASES COUNT

To help with charting, it is strongly recommended NOT to purchase more than 1 copy per customer!
- Single Music reported that only 1 purchase of any album, EP, single, or track will be counted per customer. If a customer buys more than 1 of any particular album, EP, single, or track, the sale will only count as 1 unit for Billboard charts.
- This limitation MAY OR MAY NOT reset after a certain period of time. According to Billboard, there has been a 1 digital album sale cap per customer per week. However, in some instances, it has appeared that Billboard has limited its count to one digital sale per customer.
- Note: This information has not been officially confirmed but it is the best gauge to follow to ensure your purchases are being counted.

IMPORTANT! Digital purchases need to be downloaded to a computer to count toward sales
Artist Web Stores
- As reported by chart data, Billboard does not count digital download singles from artist web stores towards the Hot 100 chart.
iTunes
- It is also important to note that you should AVOID gifting songs/albums on iTunes as it has been reported that they will not count for the Billboard charts!
- As reported by Billboard, "Sales of any specific album purchased on iTunes and gifted to another are not reported to Nielsen Music by Apple, and thus, do not count on Billboard's charts."
- Our best advice is to gift a gift card so that they can buy the album themselves

Quick Tips on DIGITAL PURCHASES

Limit purchases to 1 copy per customer per week.
For albums, buy each track separately; do not select “Complete My Album.”
Download your purchases to a computer.
Avoid gifting albums/tracks if possible.

iTunes

To Purchase:

Open iTunes on your device.
Click 'Store" on the top center menu.
Search for the Artist in the search bar.
- Make sure you have selected "iTunes Store" in the search results and that the search says "Search for ARTIST in iTunes Store.
"Find the correct album and click on the album cover. DO NOT PURCHASE THE ALBUM!
Purchase each track individually by pressing the price button to the right of it.
- DO NOT purchase the album.

Important: Remember to delete the track from your iTunes library if you are using Apple Music to stream.

Doing this will ensure your stream is counted for billboard charting.

Can I purchase iTunes with an Android phone?

Yes, you can purchase iTunes songs with an Android phone, but it requires using the Apple Music app and having a subscription.

Here's how you can do it:

Download the Apple Music App: Install the Apple Music app from the Google Play Store on your Android device.
Sign In with Your Apple ID: Log in using your Apple ID. If you don't have one, you can create it within the app.

How to buy and download digital music (MP3s) through Amazon.

Direct 7digital Purchases:
Buying directly on 7digital also counts as a sale, assuming it adheres to the purchasing rules set by Billboard.
Duplicate Purchases:
If you purchase the same release via Stationhead (which uses 7digital) and then buy it again directly on 7digital using the same account and payment method, Billboard’s systems will register them as a duplicate. In other words, only one sale per customer is counted; the duplicate won’t add extra units toward chart totals.
Best Practices:
To maximize valid sales, ensure that each purchase appears as a unique transaction. This might mean using separate credentials or distinct payment methods if you plan to buy multiple copies, while staying within Billboard’s purchasing guidelines.
In summary, each unique purchase from either channel counts for Billboard. However, since Stationhead and 7digital use the same backend for reporting, you must avoid duplicate transactions from the same customer details to ensure every transaction counts.

Buy on Multiple Platforms - iTunes, Amazon, 7digital

Follow the purchasing strategy across various digital music platforms by changing the following for each platform but keep in mind that reporting uses the following to detect bulk buying:
- Email address
- Payment method
- Shipping address
- Billing address
- IP address
Do not use a VPN.
Spread out your purchases across different platforms over the first week. For instance, iTunes on release day, amazon the day after and so on. This keeps the activity on the album appear as natural as possible.

Payment Methods

When using a credit card, confirm that the billing address on your account matches the one registered on the card.
Avoid using multiple cards with the same billing address on multiple platforms.
